Klymenko: Russians return bodies with no respect
The identification of the deceased in Ukraine is complicated by Russia's actions, which return bodies in horrific conditions. During recent repatriations, alongside Ukrainian fallen, Russian soldiers' bodies were also handed over.
"We received the bodies of Russian military personnel mixed with those of Ukrainians. This may have been done deliberately to confuse the process and burden our experts with additional work, alongside creating an information pressure. It might also reflect the Russian side's negligence. In any case, these bodies are also subject to identification," noted Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
Klymenko emphasized that after each repatriation, a laborious process begins: autopsy, thorough investigation by officials, DNA testing, and verification of every detail.
This process is not only complicated but also lengthy, and Russia further complicates identification. Bodies are returned in horrific conditions, with body parts found in different bags. Sometimes remains of one person may be returned at various stages of repatriation.
The Minister stated that experts work to the limits of possibility. Every examination is conducted meticulously and multiple times. Specialists are well-trained, laboratories are equipped, and processes are established. The biggest challenge is time.
"We understand the pain and expectations of families. We strive to expedite the identification process as much as possible. However, with each large-scale repatriation, it becomes increasingly difficult, and this may well be Russia's intention."
"We cannot afford to make mistakes. This is not just statistics. These are people, and each of them deserves respect," added the Interior Minister.
Background: On June 16, another 1245 bodies of the deceased were returned to Ukraine. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced the completion of the repatriation of bodies of the deceased under the Istanbul agreements and the return of over 6,000 bodies of the deceased.
