New Initiatives for Accessibility in Odesa
Hennadiy Trukhanov, the Mayor of Odesa, participated in a meeting of the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba.
The agenda included the establishment of transport and pedestrian routes in 15 pilot cities.
Odesa has joined the flagship project «Movement Without Barriers» with the longest inclusive tram route «North-South» in Ukraine.
«For several years, comprehensive work has been underway: replacing rails, modernizing key transport junctions, and renewing rolling stock. In addition to tram connections, an inclusive pedestrian route is to be organized. Currently, a thorough inspection of relevant locations is being conducted. 127 million hryvnias are already planned for allocation. The city will bear a significant portion of the costs, but we also expect participation from regional authorities and the state,» noted Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov.
The mayor also emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive space in the coastal area, which is an integral part of developing an accessible environment in Odesa. This includes the installation of special ramps, beach areas, and adapted infrastructure for people with disabilities and limited mobility.
We are making urban spaces comfortable and accessible for everyone, including barrier-free seaside recreation.
