New Mural in Odesa: A Symbol of Strength and Resistance
A new mural has emerged in Odesa on the Teshchyn Bridge, serving as a powerful symbol of resilience and resistance against Russian aggression. The artist has depicted Cossack Mamay not as a folkloric figure, but as a representation of the modern Ukrainian warrior.
According to the National Resistance Center, the artist Mikhailo Skop created this striking visual representation of Ukraine's struggle. In the Cossack's hands is a trident, while shadows of Cossacks who once stormed Khadjibey are illustrated nearby. Beneath the hero's feet lies the Moscow leviathan, being conquered by symbols of Odesa and Ukraine.
This mural is part of the "Resistance Murals" series, marking the third such mural in the city that speaks to the language of the streets about Ukrainian resistance.
"The new mural in Odesa – Cossack Mamay has returned to inspire resistance," states the National Resistance Center's Facebook page.
The project organizers emphasize the symbolic significance of the work: "This is not just a folkloric hero. It is an image of the modern Ukrainian warrior." The artist has blended historical memory with the contemporary context of the fight for independence.
Details of the composition draw special attention. The shadows of the Cossacks who stormed Khadjibey remind us of Odesa's heroic past, when the city was captured by Ukrainian warriors. The depiction of the Moscow leviathan beneath the Cossack symbolizes victory over the enemy.
"For memory is a weapon," the project authors note, highlighting the importance of historical consciousness in today's struggle.
The "Resistance Murals" series aims not only to beautify urban walls but also to uplift the fighting spirit of Odesans and remind them of Ukraine's heroic history. Each mural becomes part of the cultural front in the war against Russian aggression.
"Odesa speaks the language of the streets – and each of these images strikes against the enemy," concluded the project organizers.
