New Threats from Russia: Guided Bombs in Southern Ukraine

The Russian army has commenced the use of a new weapon – guided aerial bombs (GABs) equipped with jet engines in southern Ukraine, particularly in the Odesa region. The enemy employs them sporadically across various areas, testing the effectiveness and response of defense forces. However, the threat to the population is considered manageable, as these munitions can be intercepted by air defense systems. This was reported by Yuriy Ihnat, head of the communications department of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to him, these GABs resemble cruise missiles but are significantly cheaper to produce. They have already begun reaching Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Poltava regions. The enemy uses them individually to assess the reaction of defense forces.

“This is the same bomb launched from a Su-34 aircraft; its flight parameters resemble those of a cruise missile, which means it can be intercepted by air defense systems. Yesterday, the Air Command 'South' confirmed the interception of two such guided aerial bombs with extended range; specialists will determine their exact type. The fall of a third bomb has been recorded in an open area with no consequences,” — said a serviceman.

Meanwhile, a representative of the Air Force urged the public not to panic. Currently, these munitions do not pose a critical threat, as they can be intercepted.

Ihnat also noted that Russia continues to improve its weapons, while Ukraine, together with its partners, is working on developing defense technologies. For the civilian population, the main thing is to heed air alarm signals and seek shelter.
