Transition to Winter Time in Ukraine: Recent Changes
On the night of October 26th to 27th, Ukrainians again switched to winter time, moving their clocks back one hour at 4 AM. This means that the day has become longer by one hour.
The practice of transitioning between summer and winter time was first introduced in Great Britain in 1908 to make better use of electricity throughout the day.
In Ukraine, the clock changes to winter and summer time occur on the last Sunday of October and March, respectively.
This procedure is regulated by a Cabinet of Ministers resolution from May 13, 1996, concerning time calculation in the country.
On July 16, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted bill No. 4201, which abolishes the transition from summer to winter time. According to this document, a single Kyiv time – UTC+2 – will be established in Ukraine. Therefore, in 2024, Ukrainians will set their clocks back for the last time to winter time, and starting in 2025, the transition to summer time is not planned. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky has yet to sign this law.
