Celebrating the Ukrainian Language: New Traditions and Changes

In Ukraine, October 27 marks an important event — Ukrainian Language and Literacy Day.

This holiday was established on November 6, 1997, when President Leonid Kuchma issued decree No. 1241/97 in support of public organizations' initiatives.

Previously, the day was celebrated on November 9, coinciding with the day of remembrance for Nestor the Chronicler. However, with the transition to a new church calendar in 2023, the celebration date was moved to October 27.

Every year, events are held across Ukraine aimed at promoting the Ukrainian language both domestically and abroad. A traditional highlight is the National Unity Dictation, which this year will be prepared by writer Yevheniya Kuznetsova, with actress Natalia Sumska reading the text.

Last year, over 500,000 participants joined the National Unity Dictation on public platforms, with around 10,000 letters sent for verification from more than 30 countries.
