Discussion on Elderly Care in Odesa
In Odesa, a round table titled «Unity for a Dignified Old Age» was held on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons.
The primary aim of the event was to highlight pressing issues concerning the elderly, uniting efforts from government and public sectors to seek effective solutions for ensuring a dignified life for the older generation.
The round table was initiated by the Charitable Foundation «Caritas Odesa UGCC» in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the Odessa City Council.
Participants included the advisor to the Odesa mayor on social and humanitarian issues, Veronika Etnarovich, representatives from communal institutions, and NGOs such as «April Tenth», «Odesa Regional Organization of the Red Cross of Ukraine», among others.
The director of the Department of Labor and Social Policy, Olena Kytainska, emphasized that the current social policy of the government aims to enhance the rights and opportunities for elderly people, promoting their integration into community life and ensuring quality of life at any age.
Attendees discussed several key issues:
- social support for the elderly in Odesa;
- presentation of survey results identifying the key needs of older people;
- current challenges faced by the elderly during wartime;
- the situation of internally displaced persons needing social care, including housing difficulties;
- ensuring dignified care for elderly individuals.
The event provided a platform for exchanging ideas, experiences, and best practices between local authorities and the public sector.
At the end of the round table, participants discussed prospects for improving cooperation among stakeholders in the provision of social services.

The International Day of Older Persons was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 14, 1990, to promote the protection of the rights and dignity of older individuals and to draw attention to the issues of aging and their solutions.
