Support for Continuity of Local Self-Government in Ukraine
The Ukrainian Parliament has adopted a significant resolution ensuring the continuity of local self-government in the face of military aggression from Russia. This legislative initiative received support from 308 lawmakers.
According to the document, organizing local elections in compliance with national laws and European democratic standards is impossible during military actions.
It is emphasized that the responsibility for the inability to conduct elections in Ukraine lies with the aggressor – the Russian Federation.
Furthermore, it is highlighted that the stable functioning of local self-government is essential for upholding the principles of power continuity, law and order, and national security.
The resolution confirms that representatives of rural, settlement, city, and district councils, as well as their heads, elected in accordance with the law, will continue to perform their duties until new elections are held.
After the cessation of military aggression, a decision on conducting local elections will be made in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Ukraine.
Members of Parliament urge the international community to support efforts to maintain the continuity of local self-government in Ukraine.
It should be noted that on August 18, President Volodymyr Zelensky, during a meeting with President Donald Trump, expressed his readiness to hold elections after the war concludes.
