Legal Action: Assault on Elderly Man in Odesa
Investigators have completed their preliminary investigation and submitted an indictment against the perpetrator to the court. He faces up to eight years in prison for causing severe bodily harm.
This information was reported by the police.
The incident occurred in September of last year in the Primorsky district of Odesa. During the investigation, the police established that a 67-year-old resident of Mykolaiv Oblast, having missed his train, decided to find a place to stay overnight in a multi-storey building, following the advice of passersby.
By mistakenly knocking on the door of a 31-year-old Odesa resident, the elderly man attempted to enter. When the homeowner came out, a dispute arose over why the stranger was on private property.
The verbal conflict escalated into a fight, during which the younger local resident assaulted the elderly visitor. The victim lost consciousness, and the perpetrator dragged him to the fence, where he struck him several more times before leaving.
A bus station security guard alerted the police about the injured man. Medical personnel hospitalized the victim with a traumatic brain injury, skull fracture, brain contusion, and multiple abrasions to the head. According to the forensic examination, these injuries are classified as severe and life-threatening. The assailant was located and apprehended by police operatives the following morning.
The offender was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine and has been remanded in custody. After gathering sufficient evidence of the unlawful actions, he was charged under part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for intentionally causing severe bodily harm that is life-threatening. The indictment has been submitted to the court, and under current legislation, the offender faces up to eight years in prison,” stated investigator Valeriya Buliga. The investigation was conducted under the supervision of the Primorsky District Prosecutor's Office in Odesa.
