Creating an Inclusive Educational Environment in Ukraine
Modern society aims to establish an environment where everyone can fully realize their potential, regardless of physical or mental constraints. A crucial aspect of this endeavor is ensuring accessibility in education.
For individuals with special educational needs, this is not just important; it is essential for receiving quality education. Accessibility in education means creating conditions where individuals with disabilities or other special needs do not face barriers to acquiring knowledge.
As part of the City Target Program “Equality” for 2023-2025, which will be renamed to “Barrier-Free Odessa,” along with the Action Plan for 2023-2024 for implementing the National Strategy for creating a barrier-free environment in Ukraine, work is ongoing to:
- install ramps;
- carry out major repairs of restrooms in educational institutions in Odessa to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities;
- provide preschool and general secondary educational institutions with free Wi-Fi access;
- ensure high-speed internet and computer equipment for distance learning for students from vulnerable categories and educators;
- train medical and educational staff in providing first aid to students with special educational needs (including epilepsy);
- organize educational events for educators and parents of students to foster a positive atmosphere in preschool and general secondary education institutions for children with special needs.
