Hungary Opposes Ukraine's EU Membership

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed that the results of the so-called "referendum" regarding Ukraine's EU membership, initiated by his government, helped halt the accession process.

Orban stated that Hungary "understands the Ukrainians and sees their heroic struggle".

"We also recognize that they need assistance, but we want to help in a way that does not destroy ourselves. Ukraine's membership in the EU would mean self-destruction. We would be immediately drawn into war with Russia, bringing it onto EU territory, and thus to Hungary," Orban declared.

"Yesterday, thanks to over two million votes on Voks2025, we halted Ukraine's accession to the European Union," he added.

The Hungarian leader stated that Ukraine remains an "undefined entity" through no fault of its own.

"We don’t even know what Ukraine is today, where its borders lie. This danger existed in other former Soviet bloc countries as well. That’s why they were first accepted into NATO, as NATO could guarantee those borders. Only later did the EU accept relevant countries," Orban continued, adding that admitting Ukraine to NATO would mean immediate war.
