Debate on the Lesya Ukrainka Monument in Odessa
In Odessa, a discussion is ongoing about the placement of a monument to Lesya Ukrainka. Currently, city council members are considering a location in the Cosmonauts Square, which will be named after the poetess.
It is worth noting that the decision to erect a monument in honor of Lesya Ukrainka was approved by the culture and tourism committee last spring. Various locations such as Cosmonauts Park, Heroes Avenue (formerly Alexander Avenue), and Shevchenko Park were suggested.
Members of the historical and toponymic commission reported to city council members that the site in Shevchenko Park is not suitable due to the proximity of an underground toilet and a cafe being built above it.
«The location in Shevchenko Park is not ideal. A site near the Lanzheron Arch was proposed. There are both positive and negative features. There used to be an underground toilet nearby, which has been purchased, and a cafe is planned for that spot. Whether the cafe will be built raises questions about the convenience of having a monument nearby», – reported a member of the historical and toponymic commission.
Therefore, the representatives currently plan to install the monument in Cosmonauts Square near the PЦU temple, which will be constructed on the site of an existing building.
