UN Humanitarian Mission Visits Odesa

A UN humanitarian mission led by Mr. Matthias Schmale, the UN coordinator in Ukraine, is currently in Odesa.

The visit aims to evaluate the situation and discuss further steps in collaboration.

On October 15, 2024, during a meeting, acting mayor Oleksandr Filatov and city advisor Veronika Etnarovych discussed security and humanitarian needs with Mr. Matthias Schmale, focusing on the impact of military aggression, support for internally displaced persons, and readiness for the winter season.

The parties also talked about future collaboration plans with charitable organizations and international partners.

Additionally, the UN delegation visited the city’s Center for Social and Psychological Assistance, which currently houses around 100 displaced persons.

UN representatives learned about the living conditions of the people, engaging in conversations with the displaced individuals and the Center's staff.

Mr. Matthias Schmale noted that the Center, which provides comfortable living conditions for those forced to leave their homes, is among the best in Ukraine.

On October 16, the UN delegation visited Sofiivska Street, 6, where emergency repair works are being conducted on the roof of a residential building due to the cooperation of charitable organizations and utility services.

Summarizing the visit, Matthias Schmale expressed solidarity with the people of Ukraine and emphasized that international support remains a crucial element in ensuring stability and security for the population amid the ongoing conflict.

«I was very pleased to hear the priorities of the city authorities – we discussed the needs in energy infrastructure, winter preparations, and assistance for internally displaced persons,» said Mr. Schmale.
