Memorial Day for Victims of Political Repression in Odesa
On November 1, Poland celebrates All Saints’ Day, when cemeteries are illuminated by thousands of candles.
A similar ceremony took place in Odesa with candle lighting and flower laying on the 6th km of the Ovidiopol road.
This event commemorated the victims of mass political repression of the 1930s, which claimed thousands of lives, including Poles.
Participants included Odesa’s Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov, the Consul General of Poland in Odesa Jacek Gocłowski, as well as members of the Polish diaspora and community organizations.
The mayor introduced the newly appointed consul to the history of this tragic site and the efforts made prior to the full-scale invasion to honor the memory of the repression victims and document the crimes of the Soviet authorities.
During their dialogue, it was noted that Poland is aware of this site and respects the attitude towards memory displayed by the residents of Odesa.
Mr. Gocłowski emphasized that support and assistance for the implementation of the project will be provided by the consulate, the diaspora, and Poland after Ukraine’s victory.
