New Energy Initiative Launches in Odesa
The first phase of construction for a distributed generation system based on gas engine cogeneration units has begun in Odesa.
This project is being implemented in collaboration with the UNDP team, representatives from the embassies of Japan, Norway, and Sweden as part of the city’s energy system decentralization efforts.
At one of Odesa's heating plants, the first cogeneration unit has already been installed. According to Odesa's Deputy Mayor Anna Pozdnyakova, these cogeneration units are crucial for the heating sector due to their independence from central energy supplies, high energy efficiency, and quick adaptability. They can be rapidly activated, allowing for a prompt restoration of heat supply to homes.
During the handover ceremony of the gas engine power plant to the municipal utility "Odesa City Heating Supply," attendees included UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine Mr. Yako Silje, Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ukraine Mr. Jan Flete, Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Masashi Nakagome (via video link), Swedish Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Martin Oberg, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Mykola Kolisnyk (via video link), and UNDP's Green Energy Recovery Program Head Yuliya Rybak.
“I am especially grateful to our partners in Yokohama, with whom I signed a Memorandum in March 2023, allowing Odesa to acquire the necessary equipment. Thanks to the support from Japan, Norway, and Sweden, we have not only installed the first unit but also prepared sites for subsequent ones. From now on, we will be able to provide electricity to heating, water supply, and sewage facilities,” stated Hennadiy Trukhanov.
This project will help Odesa become more resilient to energy challenges faced by residents, particularly during previous blackouts.
By the end of the year, the delivery of two more units is expected. All preparatory works for their installation have been completed.
