Advancements in Ukraine's Blood Donation System

The Minister of Health of Ukraine, Viktor Lyashko, held an important working meeting to discuss the implementation of a new electronic blood donation tracking system known as «eBlood».

Attendees included representatives from the Ministry of Health, the National Health Service of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Transplant Coordination Center, and the state enterprise «Electronic Health». Participants discussed the key phases of service implementation, its main functionalities, and future development plans.

“The development of digital infrastructure in the field of blood donation is a significant step towards modernizing the healthcare system. With the «eBlood» system, we can manage blood supplies more effectively, reduce risks associated with shortages, and enhance patient safety. This service will make the donation process transparent and comprehensible, allowing for quick access to information about available blood supplies, their groups, and Rh factors, which is critical for timely lifesaving. This tool optimizes medical workers' operations and increases donors' trust in the system. We aim to create a unified digital space for blood donation — from registration to quality control. This ensures that every donation is accounted for and utilized where it is most needed, enabling the state to effectively plan its policy in this sector. Such tools make Ukrainian medicine modern and focused on people's needs”

noted Health Minister Viktor Lyashko.

Among the system's main features is the comprehensive recording of the donation process: from the date and location of blood donation to medical examination results and reasons for any failed donations.

The system will also contain data on blood supplies in various medical institutions, including their groups and Rh factors. All this information will be centralized and accessible in digital format, allowing medical facilities to effectively manage blood donation supplies according to actual needs.

Currently, the system already includes modules for administrative management, logistics, and registration, which provide for the accounting of donations, the movement of blood components, user registration, and basic organization of blood centers' operations. Over 650 medical institutions are already connected to the platform.

In the future, integration of the «eBlood» system with the electronic healthcare system is planned, which will ensure a unified digital space for blood donation. Within this integration, functionality for entering medical examination results of donors has already been implemented.

Additionally, a registry of donor visits and a registry of licenses for blood collection and testing have been created, which will be operational starting June 1, 2025.

Currently, a phased expansion of the system's functionality is underway, with plans to launch blood sample tracking and implement quality control, laboratory testing, and donor incentive programs soon.
