Remembrance Day for Defenders of Ukraine: Honoring Heroism

Every year on August 29, Ukraine honors the memory of those who gave their lives to protect the country, its independence, and integrity.

This day was established by the Presidential decree on August 23, 2019, to commemorate the heroism of military personnel and volunteers who lost their lives for their homeland.

The choice of this date for honoring defenders is not accidental: on August 29, 2014, during the Ilovaisk operation, one of the most tragic phases of the Russo-Ukrainian war occurred, resulting in numerous Ukrainian soldiers' deaths, showcasing their heroism.

Military Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasized that the memory of the fallen obliges us to be strong in defending national interests.

Syrskyi noted that Russian aggression continues to claim Ukrainian lives, and each loss brings unspeakable pain to relatives and the entire nation.

He also stressed that the sacrifices of Ukrainian warriors are the foundation for national freedom and state independence. The memory of heroes reminds us of the price of this freedom.

Today, Ukrainians honor the memory of those who fought for the country's freedom. Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that thanks to these heroes, Ukraine exists.

“We gratefully remember all defenders who stopped the enemy at the onset of aggression,” Shmyhal emphasized.

The symbol of this day is the sunflower, which grew in the battlefields near Ilovaisk, where Ukrainian soldiers defended their homeland.

“We continue our struggle for victory and independence. We remember. We fight. We will win!” - added the minister.
