What Causes the Blooming of the Black Sea?

What makes the water in the Black Sea turn unusual colors? Experts are conducting tests to check for pollution levels.

This was reported by the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern District.

Recently, the coastline of Odessa has been affected by a massive accumulation of algae — waves are washing them ashore, leading to an unnatural green, yellow, or brown hue in the water.

This is typically a seasonal occurrence associated with rising water temperatures; however, an excess of pollutants may also trigger water blooming.

To clarify the situation, inspectors collected sea water samples within Odessa, particularly in areas where algae form a continuous layer on the surface. The research is ongoing. The results of the laboratory analysis will be published upon completion.
