Illegal Fishing in Odesa: Ecologists Report Poaching Incident

In Odesa, near the Sasyk Lagoon and the Danube Biosphere Reserve, ecologists discovered a case of poaching: men using illegal gear (spinning rods) caught 30 stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) in just a few hours, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 3 kg per person.

This was reported on Facebook by Ivan Rusyev, head of the research department at the Tuzlivski Lymany National Park.

"Recently, there has been a large number of stingrays in the coastal area of the Black Sea, where they feed on crabs. The population of sea cats has recovered during the war, as a ban on industrial fishing in the sea was enacted," the scientist wrote.

Awareness-raising work was conducted with the offenders, and the police were called.

The live stingrays were released back into their natural habitat – the sea.
