Alarming Statistics on Fires and Traffic Accidents in Ukraine

Every day in Ukraine, there are approximately 240 fire incidents, resulting in the death of about four people and injuries to five.

This information was shared by Roman Tsyren, head of the Department for Emergency Situations Prevention, during a briefing at the "Media Center Ukraine".

Tsyren noted that when looking at the annual statistics, it shows a "worrying trend".

"On average, two thousand citizens die each year due to fires, while five thousand may be injured," said the DSNS representative.

The DSNS also urged Ukrainians to refrain from starting bonfires in nature during the Easter celebrations.

"Our country has suffered greatly from explosive objects. Some areas have been de-occupied, but they still contain many dangerous items.

Especially if forests and parks are to be used, I do not recommend lighting fires, as this year has seen a significant increase in ecosystem fires. There has been a 68% rise in fires in ecosystems," explained Roman Tsyren.

Casualties from emergencies also include deaths and injuries resulting from traffic accidents, said Roman Tsyren.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, almost 26 thousand accidents with casualties occurred in 2024. More than 3.2 thousand people died and over 32 thousand were injured, which is an increase of 5-9% compared to 2023.

As reported by Oleksiy Biloshytsky, the first deputy head of the Patrol Police Department, the most common cause of traffic accidents with casualties is speeding, accounting for nearly 39.4%.

Other prevalent causes of accidents include violations of maneuvering rules, passing intersections and pedestrian crossings, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

"If we add the traffic accidents, which claim the lives of six thousand of our citizens, we are facing enormous human losses," summarized the head of the Emergency Situations Prevention Department.

It is worth noting that only 55 Ukrainians died in domestic fires during the first six days of 2025. Fires occurred due to short circuits, violations of heating appliance usage rules, and careless handling of fire, including smoking in bed while intoxicated.
