New GMO Registration System in Ukraine
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved new regulations for the management of the GMO registry, marking a significant step towards improving consumer safety.
This was announced by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.
The established registry is intended to be a unified information system for recording, monitoring, and storing data on all registered GMOs in Ukraine.
The ministry explained that implementing such a registry is essential for ensuring transparency in the biotechnology sector, enhancing consumer safety, and fulfilling Ukraine's obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU.
Moreover, the regulation aligns Ukrainian legislation with EU acts concerning GMO management, particularly Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of GMOs into the environment.
This will allow for the creation of a European-like regulatory system for tracking and controlling GMOs, which will help reduce risks to human health and the environment.
The regulation will come into effect in September 2026, simultaneously with the new law regulating genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
