World Down Syndrome Day: New Initiatives in Odessa
On March 21, people around the world recognize a special day for those with Down syndrome.
In Odessa, there are over 150 individuals living with this condition. To raise public awareness and combat stereotypes, a photo exhibition was organized at the city’s integrated social services center, showcasing the families of Odessa that include individuals with genetic anomalies.
The event was addressed by Olena Kytainska, the director of the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the Odessa City Council, who wished everyone peace, harmony, and patience.
Lidiia Ostrohladova, a mother of two children with Down syndrome, expressed her gratitude for the attention and assistance in addressing the needs of people with disabilities.
Representatives from public organizations such as “Future Guarantee”, “Special Children”, and “Healthy Society” also participated in the event.
At the end of the gathering, the Department of Labor and Social Policy presented special gifts to the guests.
Moreover, employees of the Odessa social protection units joined the global flashmob “Colorful Socks”, attaching an odd number of colorful socks to their outerwear as a symbol of the additional chromosome.
