Safety at Beaches: Snakes in Odessa
Recently, there have been more instances where people encounter snakes on the beaches or in the lagoons of Odessa. The director of the Odessa Zoo, Igor Bilyakov, assures that there are no venomous snakes in the city.
According to Igor Bilyakov, four species of snakes inhabit the area: the common and water snake, as well as the Sarmatian and yellow-bellied rat snakes. He emphasizes that there is no need to panic when encountering these animals.
Even though the yellow-bellied rat snake bit the zoo director, Igor Bilyakov suffered no harm and urged people not to fear snakes or harm them.
“Just leave the snake alone; it won't do you any harm,” he urged. However, if someone sees a snake in their car or home, they can call Igor Bilyakov at 068 04 04 539. He promises to assist.
