Car Theft in Podilsk: New Developments
Police have apprehended a suspect in the illegal theft of a vehicle in the Podilsk district. The perpetrator stole the car as he did not want to walk home. He has been charged and a preventive measure has been ordered. He faces imprisonment along with property confiscation.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred in a village within the Zelenohirsk community. A local resident contacted the police, informing them that an unknown individual had stolen his VAZ car from his yard during the night.
"The police found the vehicle on the outskirts of the village, near the crime scene, and during immediate investigative actions that same day, they quickly identified and arrested the perpetrator at his residence. He turned out to be a 26-year-old man from Balta, previously convicted of property crimes", the statement noted.
The suspect explained to the police that upon seeing an unguarded car in someone else's yard, he decided to drive it home. The car was unlocked, and he started the engine by connecting the ignition wires. However, he couldn't drive far as the vehicle broke down, and he fled the scene.
"We detained the suspect in accordance with procedural law. We have gathered sufficient evidence and informed him of the charges for committing a crime under part 2 of article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to the illegal acquisition of a vehicle, committed repeatedly. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years, with or without property confiscation. Following our appeal, the court selected custody as a preventive measure for the suspect. We also ordered a valuation examination to determine the car's worth and the amount of damages incurred by the victim", said Oleg Sytnyk, head of police department No. 1 of Podilsk RUP.
