Reviving Railway Connections Between Ukraine and Moldova

On March 31, Andriy Kashuba, Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine, held an online meeting with Vladimir Bolea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure of Moldova. The discussion covered the restoration of passenger railway services between Odessa and Chisinau, as well as the transit of Moldovan freight wagons through Ukrainian territory. This was reported by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine, as conveyed by the publication ‘South Today’.

Also joining the discussion were Oleksandr Pertzovsky, head of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, and other officials from both sides.

The Ukrainian side expressed interest in developing international railway transportation with Moldova, emphasizing the importance of security and economic factors.

“Ukraine and Moldova are not just neighbors but reliable partners united by common European aspirations and a strategic vision for infrastructure development. We are confident that restoring the Odessa – Chisinau train service will enhance transport accessibility and economic ties between our countries,” stated Deputy Minister Andriy Kashuba.

Additionally, the Ukrainian side stressed the need for a detailed analysis of the economic viability of re-establishing the connection, including assessing passenger flow and potential transport tariffs.

Another topic discussed in the meeting was the restoration of the transit of Moldovan freight wagons through Ukraine. The Ukrainian side confirmed that there are no restrictions on their movement.

“Active work is underway to restore stable system operations. The Ukrainian side is ready to ensure full data exchange regarding Moldovan wagons immediately after the technical restoration measures are completed,” the ministry stated.

In conclusion, the parties agreed to continue working on all issues and maintain close communication for further development of railway connections between Ukraine and Moldova.
