Digital Hryvnia Development: Challenges Ahead

The development of the e-hryvnia is ongoing, yet its potential launch in 2027 remains uncertain.
According to Forbes Ukraine, Alexey Shaban, the deputy chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine, stated that launching the digital currency requires substantial financial resources, and allocating these during wartime could be seen as unethical.
The regulator is planning a pilot project to test the digital currency not only within the NBU but also in real-world scenarios such as payments, transfers, and government programs. However, the costs associated with the pilot are high, and the technical requirements are complex.
"We are progressing, but I cannot say that 2027 will be the year of the e-hryvnia launch," noted Alexey Shaban.
It is important to remember that the concept of the e-hryvnia was presented by the regulator in November 2022. The primary aim of the electronic hryvnia is to effectively fulfill all monetary functions, complementing both cash and cashless forms of the hryvnia. The utilization of the e-hryvnia should be convenient and accessible for all segments of the population, legal entities, government agencies, banks, and non-bank financial institutions.
In October 2022, the State Enterprise "Ukrainian Institute of Intellectual Property" (UKRPATENT) registered the trademark "e-hryvnia" and e-hryvnia, which belongs to the NBU.
