Alaska Airlines Suspends Flights Due to IT System Failure
Alaska Airlines has temporarily halted all flights due to a significant IT system failure. This incident marks the second major disruption for the airline in the past year.
According to Reuters, the issue arose on Sunday evening around 8 PM Pacific Time (3 AM Greenwich Mean Time on Monday). The exact cause of the failure has not yet been disclosed.
The airline indicated that the effects of the disruption would be felt throughout the evening, but specific details remain undisclosed. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also not provided any comments.
This is the second major incident affecting Alaska Airlines in a year; in April 2024, the airline suspended flights due to a system error related to aircraft weight calculations.
Additionally, in June, Alaska's subsidiary Hawaiian Airlines reported a cyberattack that impacted part of its IT systems. This incident coincided with warnings from Google and Palo Alto Networks about the activities of the hacker group “Scattered Spider,” which has shown interest in the aviation industry.
Alaska Air Group operates 238 Boeing aircraft and 87 Embraer jets. The company has yet to comment on any potential connection between the cyberattack and the recent failure.
