  • This species is protected and listed in the Red Book of Ukraine

Why Birds Chose the Odesa Region

Seven pairs of gadwalls (Anas strepera) with ducklings were observed in the floodplains and dense reeds in a section of the national park known as «Tuzlivska Amazonia». This aquatic bird species is rare in Ukraine and is under protection.

Experts from the National Natural Park note that the gadwall is an especially cautious bird. It is nearly impossible to photograph: in case of danger, the female hides, and the ducklings instantly scatter into the reeds. This complicates observation but confirms that the area remains safe for breeding.

The presence of gadwall broods highlights the critical role of Tuzlivski Limany in preserving biodiversity. According to park staff, these wetlands are among the most valuable in Ukraine, especially considering the growing impact of climate change and human activity.
