Ukraine's Cutting-Edge Sea Drones in Action
On Wednesday, May 14, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR) unveiled its latest sea drones, which have already demonstrated their effectiveness by destroying numerous Russian ships, planes, and helicopters, writes a journalist from Kyiv Post who attended the event at a secret location in the capital.
The Magura sea drones represent advanced technological weaponry that has allowed the fighters of GUR Group 13 to shift the balance of power in the Black Sea in favor of Ukraine.
GUR's head, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, was also present at the secret presentation.
The Ukrainian intelligence agency publicly presented a series of strike sea drones called Magura:
- the famous "killer" of the Russian Black Sea fleet ships, the Magura V5, which is Ukraine's primary sea drone capable of carrying up to 320 kg of payload and equipped with a machine gun module.
- the multifunctional platform Magura V6P, with a range of up to 540 nautical miles.
- the missile-carrying drone Magura V7, which for the first time in history has destroyed an enemy combat aircraft. This drone can carry up to 650 kg of payload and has a range of up to 800 nautical miles.
- the model Magura V7, equipped with a combat machine gun module.
The Magura sea drones are a new technological weapon that has strategically shifted the situation in the Black Sea to Ukraine's advantage.
The operators from the unit present at the event assured that this is just the beginning for the Russian fleet, emphasizing that the future of warfare lies in advanced technologies.
"We can confidently say that the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Group 13, has pushed the Russian Black Sea fleet back to their bases.
They are limited in their actions, and they are not fulfilling any operational tasks," said the commander of Group 13 with the call sign "Thirteenth."
"On December 31, 2024, I believe a turning point occurred in the history of the fleet — two Russian Mi-8 helicopters were destroyed, and one was damaged. Also, as you know, we destroyed two aircraft."
Over two years of combat use of various modifications of the Magura sea drone, the Ukrainian military intelligence has destroyed or incapacitated 17 Russian naval and aerial targets, including two Mi-8 helicopters, two Su-30 fighters, as well as large ships of the Russian Black Sea fleet — "Sergiy Kotov," "Ivanovets," "Tsezar Kunikov," and others. The total losses of the enemy are estimated at over 500 million dollars.
The Russian fleet continues to illegally operate in Ukrainian waters, primarily in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
Ukrainian forces regularly strike at military vessels and bases of the Russian Black Sea fleet, employing precision missiles, sea drones, and unmanned aerial vehicles. These strikes have forced the RF to partially relocate some ships from Crimea to Novorossiysk.
