Justice for Children: Abusive Father Faces Trial
A 27-year-old man will stand trial in Odessa for repeatedly abusing his young children – a two-month-old daughter and a two-year-old son.
On one occasion, the father inflicted various degrees of bodily harm on them. He faces potential imprisonment for his actions.
This was reported by the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odessa region.
The incident occurred in October 2024. Authorities established that for two months, the father hit his daughter every time she cried, attempting to "calm" the infant.
When the child's condition worsened, her 24-year-old mother called for an ambulance. The woman stated that she "was afraid to intervene with her husband".
The girl was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Odessa Regional Children's Clinical Hospital with head and body injuries.
"The couple had not previously come to the attention of the police or child protection services. Besides the daughter, they have a two-year-old son who, according to preliminary reports, was also beaten by the father. Doctors are examining the boy, who preliminarily has a closed fracture of the thigh," – the police of Odessa reported.
The forensic examination found that the children sustained various degrees of bodily injuries. Specifically, the boy was diagnosed with a closed femoral fracture, abrasions, and bruises, while his sister had multiple bruises, closed rib fractures, lung injuries, and brain injuries that led to swelling and coma.
The children have been removed from the family and are currently in a state children's institution.
The 27-year-old man was notified of suspicion under part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional infliction of serious bodily injuries to a child).
Investigators have initiated another proceeding under part 1 of Article 122 of the CCU for inflicting medium severity bodily injuries on the boy.
The suspect has been placed in custody without the right to bail.
The indictment against the man has been sent to court. He remains in custody, facing up to eight years in prison for his actions.
Additionally, law enforcement has allocated a separate proceeding regarding the parents under Article 166 of the CCU (malicious failure to fulfill obligations for child care). The penalty for this article is up to five years of imprisonment.
