Military Oversight Over Universities: A New Approach to National Defense
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine is proposing a partnership model between military brigades and universities across the country. This initiative is part of the "Fundamentals of National Defense" course.
The program will include both theoretical teachings and practical exercises that will foster direct interaction between military units and educational institutions.
Education Minister Oksen Lisovyi shared this information during an interview on Radio Khartiya.
According to him, this initiative will help young people deepen their understanding of national defense and shape their worldview.
Starting September 1, Ukraine will implement basic military training in universities, which differs from standard army training.
"When a student is called to serve, they will undergo intensive training right before joining military units," the minister stated.
The plan includes collaboration with military units that are permanently stationed in the regions where universities are located.
"Not every brigade is equipped to work with universities, as ideological aspects and shared goals are also critical here," Oksen Lisovyi added.
He emphasized the importance of utilizing the material and technical resources of military units, including training grounds, weapons, and experienced instructors.
In his opinion, this partnership will establish a tradition where military units take care of one or several universities, thereby strengthening ties and engaging youth in important activities.
"The military honors their fallen comrades. They have a different attitude towards their wounded and to those who have lost their health in war. This is also about involving students in the processes of commemoration and memorialization," the minister explained.
The idea of military oversight over universities was inspired by the traditions of some universities that already support brigades where their alumni serve.
