Winterizing City Fountains: Processes and Challenges

Since early October, specialists from the Municipal Enterprise "Service Center" have begun the process of preparing city fountains for winter.

Winterizing a fountain is a complex task. To ensure that the fountains survive the winter, the team must blow out the water supply systems, remove nozzles, and disconnect electrical and pumping equipment. After disassembly, the condition of the equipment is assessed, and repairs are carried out if necessary.

Typically, the fountains located in residential areas are the first to be winterized, followed by those in parks and squares. The fountains in the central parts of Odessa are winterized last.

In recent years, the "Service Center" has adopted a practice of fully sealing the basins of several fountains. This method is applied to the fountains in the City Garden, Shevchenko Park ("Small Vase"), and the Cosmonauts Square. Additionally, since the onset of the war, four fountains located in the UNESCO zone have been completely winterized and did not operate this year: the Memorial Fountain for the victims of German-Romanian fascists, the "Petya and Gavrik" fountain, the "Children and Frog" fountain, and the "Source" fountain.

The process of reactivating the fountains will begin in early spring. Typically, the first fountains in the city center are turned on by April 1, while the others follow in April.

Additional Information
The "Service Center" maintains 27 city fountains. In 2024, 17 fountains were reactivated. All of them are outdoors, thus their operational period is significantly influenced by weather conditions.
15 employees ensure their proper functioning.
Throughout the spring and summer, the specialists of the "Service Center" carry out regular maintenance: cleaning fountain basins, collecting debris, cleaning external filters and nozzles, flushing sand filters, and maintaining appropriate water levels.
In addition to scheduled maintenance, the fountains occasionally suffer from vandalism, necessitating unscheduled repairs.
The fountain on Krymsky Boulevard has historically experienced the most vandalism, where numerous teenagers, despite warnings and prohibitory signs, interfere with the fountain’s operation.
All restoration work is handled by the specialists of the "Service Center", who continue to carry out their duties despite the challenges posed by wartime.
