Memorial for Heroes: New Developments in Odesa
In Odesa, efforts are underway to establish a Memorial honoring fallen soldiers.
A recent meeting held at the city council, chaired by Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov, focused on commemorating the memory of fallen Heroes.
The participants were introduced to a new concept for the Memorial, designed by architect David Pishchev in collaboration with military families.
During a prior meeting, prototypes of headstones were presented.
One of the main topics was identifying the appropriate site for the Memorial, which will allow for precise planning. The mayor pointed out that as early as 2014, Odesa faced a shortage of burial spaces. To expand the cemetery, the city purchased land from private individuals that was previously state-owned.
The Director of the Legal Department, Inna Popovska, clarified that this pertains to a single property complex currently managed by the municipal enterprise «City Capital Construction». This area is being considered as a potential site for the Memorial.
The mayor instructed the land registry bureau to conduct aerial photography of the site for further planning and project ordering.
According to David Pishchev's proposal, the Memorial will include:
- standardized sectors for military burials;
- a universal building for farewell ceremonies and commemorative events;
- a park zone with elements that allow for creative expressions of grief and sharing of memorable moments.
Work is ongoing to analyze proposals and seek resources for the implementation of the project. The establishment of the Memorial will be a significant step in preserving the memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
