Vandalism on Primorsky Boulevard: Unique Exhibit Damaged

Last weekend, broken glass was discovered in a sarcophagus showcasing ancient artifacts on Primorsky Boulevard in Odessa.

Vice Mayor Anna Poznyakova believes this is likely the work of vandals.

«Someone decided to “have fun” and left us with shards of glass, scratched metal, and a bill for expensive repairs,» she wrote on her Facebook page.

Currently, city workers have covered the dome with plastic, but replacing the broken glass will take time, as the sarcophagus is made from specially ordered thick glass (1 cm) that must meet specific requirements.

“At a time when every penny goes towards supporting the front and critical infrastructure, unnecessary expenses due to someone's irresponsibility are a luxury the city cannot afford. Primorsky is a symbol of Odessa, a place of strength for citizens and visitors alike. Let’s not destroy what we have built together,” noted Anna Poznyakova.

It is worth recalling that under the dome of Primorsky Boulevard lie the remains of a Greek settlement from the 6th-5th centuries BC, excavated by archaeologists in 2008 and arranged as a museum exhibit.

The viewing pyramid of the mini-museum has been a target for vandalism multiple times; the last incident occurred in winter 2016. Additionally, some of our fellow citizens occasionally litter the mini-museum’s exhibits with scraps of paper and other debris.
