Remembrance Day for Defenders of Ukraine
August 29th is marked in Ukraine as Remembrance Day for the defenders who lost their lives fighting for our independence and sovereignty.
In Odessa, the morning began with honoring the memory of the fallen heroes and laying flowers at the Cossack crosses in the military burial sector of one of the city's cemeteries.

The Remembrance Day for Defenders of Ukraine was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine on August 23, 2019, to commemorate the heroism of soldiers and volunteers who gave their lives for the homeland.
The date, August 29, was chosen because it marks a significant event 10 years ago during the Russo-Ukrainian war and the Ilovaisk operation, where a powerful breakthrough occurred, showcasing the heroism of soldiers and volunteers.
The sunflower has become the symbol of this day, as many defenders laid down their lives in the fields of sunflowers for the freedom of our country.
On August 29, we remember not only those who died in the Ilovaisk tragedy but also the tens of thousands of defenders who fell in the ongoing conflict since 2014, which has tested our nation profoundly.
