New Inclusivity: Odessa's Journey Towards a Barrier-Free City
In Odessa, expert groups are actively working to identify and remove barriers in various aspects of urban life. These initiatives were launched at the end of last year under the leadership of Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov.
The teams consist of veterans, military personnel who have suffered injuries, community representatives, and individuals with disabilities. Together with local authorities, they are developing plans to create an inclusive environment in Odessa.
“We are actively engaging space users in all processes. We have already achieved significant results: a new inclusive beach, a sports ground with special exercise equipment, and other infrastructural projects are in preparation. Schools are conducting Barrier-Free Lessons. Our groups are also inspecting the city for accessibility to ensure nothing is overlooked,” said Oleksiy Morozov, head of the NGO “Barrier-Free” and deputy head of the Barrier-Free Council.
In collaboration with city departments, the expert groups conduct inspections of beaches and recreational areas, analyzing route accessibility and public buildings for proper infrastructure. After each inspection, the team identifies issues and provides recommendations for the Barrier-Free Council.
“An accessible environment must be a norm in our lives, not a privilege. The collaboration of the city, the public sector, veterans, people with disabilities, and businesses is the right strategy that has already proven effective. We have picked up the pace and plan to increase efforts as we recognize the growing need for inclusive spaces,” emphasized Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov.
