Odesa Activists Stage Action at Pushkin Monument
Today, April 13, Odesa activists held a peculiar action by the monument to Russian poet Alexander Pushkin near the city hall on Primorsky Boulevard: they placed a noose around the monument and hung a sign reading «Looking for a bulldozer».
According to a video published, some Odesa residents were outraged by these actions.
«Are there no more problems?» – inquired a man off-camera.
The outcome of the confrontation remains unknown.
As noted by the head and founder of the youth organization «We Make You Nervous», Kateryna Musienko, activists decided to «prepare the Pushkin monument for Easter» in this unconventional manner.
«Today, the activists of «We Make You Nervous» prepared the Pushkin monument for Easter. This clearly indicates that the figure should celebrate the holiday in a museum. We adhere to Ukrainian Easter traditions – we take out all the unnecessary items from our homes!», – the activist wrote on her Facebook page.
She also stated that «the history of occupation by the Moscow Empire and then the Soviet Union should be studied in textbooks and museum exhibits».
«Colonial past monuments have no place on the streets of a Ukrainian city», – the head of the youth organization believes.
In her opinion, the city council, having the authority to dismantle the monument of the «Moscow figure», not only ignores its responsibilities but even dared to renovate the monument's facade and plant flowerbeds around it.
«Let's together help Trukhanov find the equipment to demolish the marker of the «Russian world» in the center of Odesa! Tear off the number from the «Looking for a bulldozer» sign and call the mayor to expedite the process!», – calls Musienko.
