Monitoring the Black Sea: New Insights from Odessa
Ecologists are actively monitoring the ecological state of the Black Sea near Mayachny Lane in Odessa. Early in 2025, numerous complaints were received from residents of the 16th station of the Velykyi Fontan about potential sewage discharges into the sea.
This was reported by the press service of the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern Region.
In response, a series of measures were initiated: joint inspections involving complainants, local authorities, and community members, along with assessments of the coastal zone and sampling of seawater near the piers. Preliminary analyses indicated that no exceeding of the maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) was detected. However, for an extended period, it was impossible to collect samples directly in the water due to a lack of technical support. With the assistance of the Municipal Emergency Diving Service of the Odessa City Council, inspectors ventured out to sea and collected new samples approximately 100 meters from the shore, near the deep-water discharge of storm sewers. Additional laboratory results will be released after the analysis is completed.
