Swallows Build Unique Nests in Odesa Region
In the Odesa region, within the National Nature Park “Tuzlivski Lymany”, this year 11 nests built by rural swallows were found. Researchers closely monitored the birds and documented 35 chicks throughout the season.
This information was shared by Ivan Rusev, head of the research department at the NP “Tuzlivski Lymany”.
One pair of swallows decided to have a second brood and built a new nest on the backbone of a war-killed dolphin – an afalin. “This backbone and others, alongside dolphin skulls collected along the Black Sea coast, serve as reminders of the brutal war of Russia against Ukraine – the battle for the Black Sea, where dolphins and azovkas perished by the thousands”, Ivan Rusev noted. The chicks are expected to be ready for flight around August 15, and by September they will join the adults for their migration to warm Africa.
