Energy Independence in Odessa: New Solutions for the Community

The Municipality of Odessa, in collaboration with the Government of Japan, UNDP, and international partners from Norway and Sweden, is implementing a project to construct generation facilities based on gas engine technology with a total capacity of approximately 30 MW.

This initiative is being carried out as part of the decentralization process aimed at increasing energy resilience and security for the Odessa community.

The first cogeneration unit is already connected and is successfully powering one of the city's heating plants.

«This unit can produce 3.3 MW per hour. The heating plant requires about half of that power. Moving forward, we plan to redirect the surplus to support other critical infrastructure facilities,» said the Mayor of Odessa.

Currently, work is underway to connect three more cogeneration units that have already been delivered to the city. In total, 9 units with a combined capacity of 30 MW will be manufactured for Odessa under the UNDP order.

Additionally, 7 cogeneration units from the German Agency GIZ have arrived in Odessa. All will be installed at district heating plants, with two already in the connection process. Components for connecting the other five units are expected shortly.
