Revitalizing Urban Greenery: Pruning of Sophora
At the end of winter, just before the onset of the growing season, experts from the municipal enterprise «Miskzelentrest» carry out seasonal crown formation works on trees, particularly Japanese sophora, mulberries, and ashes. This procedure is essential for maintaining their health.
The sophoras adorning the Theater Square were planted on September 25, 1895, and this year they will celebrate their 130th anniversary. These trees are recognized as local botanical landmarks.
Since early February, gardeners have begun rejuvenation pruning of sophora trees throughout the city. The pruning is conducted manually using specialized tools. The weeping crown shape of the Japanese sophora is artificially created, necessitating regular maintenance.
This year, formative pruning is planned for 463 weeping trees at sites serviced by «Miskzelentrest» (including the City Garden, Theater Square, Shevchenko Park, and the «Luzanivka» hydropark, among others).

Japanese sophora is a deciduous tree that reaches heights of 20 to 30 meters in its native regions (Japan, China, Korea), while in temperate latitudes it typically grows no taller than 10 to 12 meters. This species is known for its longevity, living up to 500 years or more. In Odessa, the use of sophora for landscaping began in the 1820s.
