Celebrating 60 Years of Friendship: Odessa and Yokohama

Odessa celebrates 60 years of collaboration with the Japanese city of Yokohama.

This week, Odessa is hosting Days of Japanese Culture dedicated to the anniversary of its sister city relationship with Yokohama.

Today, the Central City Library named after I.Ya. Franko became a venue where visitors could immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Japanese culture.

Creative children’s groups and young artists from Odessa showcased the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Japan.

The Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine, Mr. Masashi Nakagome, in his video greeting, affirmed Japan's unwavering support for Ukraine and underscored the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening friendship between our nations.

The Yokohama City Hall also participated in the celebration through a video presentation. Guests of the photo exhibition had the opportunity to learn more about our sister city.

“Odessa is honored to call Japan a friend. Exactly 60 years ago, we became sister cities with Yokohama. Our relationship is a model of stable international friendship and cultural exchange. This support has been especially significant over the past three years of war in Ukraine,” stated Ivan Liptuga, the Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Culture, and Marketing.

Yokohama provides assistance at various levels: Odessa receives vital humanitarian support, organizes exchanges for youth in arts and sports. Together, we are restoring a kindergarten after enemy attacks, developing cogeneration technologies, and forming a post-war recovery plan for the city according to modern standards.

This is a story of true friendship that transcends borders, language barriers, and cultural differences.

The best way for Odessa residents to express their gratitude will be to engage with this wonderful culture, honor our partnership, and remember its history.
