Preparing Odessa Schools for the New Academic Year

As the new academic year approaches, educational institutions in Odessa are undergoing intensive preparations.

The primary focus is on child safety: currently, 90 out of 120 schools already have shelters in place, with modernization ongoing.

A notable example is School No. 62, where engineers managed to relocate a complex communication system, deepen the basement floor, and reinforce the foundation. Now, over 500 students can learn at their home school simultaneously.

The shelter will also be open to neighborhood residents.

At School No. 122, the existing shelter is being expanded, the gym is being renovated, and STEM laboratories are being created — steps that reflect not only protection but also educational advancement and early specialization.

Both schools had previously suffered from shelling. Today, educators and builders are fully restoring their operations.

“We are not just repairing walls; we are creating a safe, comfortable, and inspiring environment where children want to grow and develop,” commented Pavel Vugelman, Deputy Mayor of Odessa.

A total of nearly 325 million UAH has been allocated this year for repair work in the city's educational sector. Work is also being conducted in Lyceum No. 125 and the Mykhailivskyi Lyceum, as well as Gymnasiums No. 12 and No. 61.

Thanks to international partners, Kindergarten No. 14 is being restored, and Kindergarten No. 29 is already welcoming children.

“Thanks to everyone involved — educators, builders, deputies, parents, and partners. After all, childhood is unique, and caring for it is the true meaning for Odessa,” said Olena Buynievych, Director of the Department of Education and Science.
