Pollution Issues in the Black Sea
Environmental inspectors have recorded elevated levels of suspended substances and ammonium in areas with significant algae accumulation in the Black Sea.
This information was provided by the press service of the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.
Experts explain that the decay of algae in coastal areas leads to exceeding permissible concentration limits along the beaches. To prevent the situation from worsening, the Inspection sent a letter to the Odessa City Council requesting the cleanup of the shoreline from accumulated algae. Additionally, the Inspection reached out to the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology and the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection in the Odessa region to conduct further research on seawater. The inspection will cover microbiological and sanitary-chemical indicators, as well as hydrobiological and bacteriological analyses of water in areas of massive algae accumulation.
